The door shown above, as well as the base board beneath the children's mural started out as white, manufactured press wood.

A base color is applied that is compatible to the primer underneath, the medium the artist will use on top of the primer, and the color of the wood that is being replicated.

Every craftsman develops tricks to his trade. Shown is the dump truck of airbrushes, a Paasche VL, and my favorite varnish for doors, as it is a tough, long lasting coating.

Both of the finishes shown above started out as white primer. Underneath is medium density fiberboard (MDF).

Whereas the much less noxious water based paint can be applied within your home to the objects that are to be fauxed, such as the columns illustrated below, oil base paints and varnishes need to be applied in the great outdoors, a shop, or your garage, as the above photo illustrates.

Kitchen cabinets, as a rule, should be removed from the kitchen in order to be repainted, darkened, or fauxed. As a rare exception, it might be possible to remove all the drawer faces and the kitchen cabinet doors for re-coating elsewhere, while the base of the cabinets can be re-coated in place. This depends on your being able to isolate your kitchen from the rest of the house and vent the air of the kitchen outside.
